An Analysis of Factors Affecting Work-Family Conflict of Korean Working People: Focusing the Effect of Workplace Support and Familial Support

Abstract
This study examines which factors affect work-family reconciliation conflict of Korean working people. Especially, the study focuses on the effect of organizational and familial supports on work-family conflict, while specifically comparing the work-family reconciliation difficulties by family-earning types, dual-earner working women, dual-earner working men, and single-earner working men. The survey was a conducted random sample, with random selection of respondents who are working, married, and over the age of 20-65 in Seoul and the metropolitan area. Findings are that work-family conflicts are affected by age, health conditions, having children under 6 years, having housework-aid, numbers of working hours, observing statutory on-time working and 5-day working, family-friendly policy, and organizational support, and familial support. Controlling for all other variables, working women from dual-earner family carries the highest level of work-family conflict. In the subsequent separate group analyses, the level of work-family conflict of working women from dual-earner family is determined by both workplace support and familial supports, while that of other two groups are only changed by the amount of familial support. In conclusion, policy suggestions are given for enhancing work-family supportiveness and facilitation of working people in Korea.
